F.a.q. about our honey

Q. Where are your products produced?

A. In western Nebraska in the heartland of the USA. 85% of or ingredients are produced locally in Nebraska.

Q. Is your honey ORGANIC?

A. No, but we do use integrated pest management. This is done by using pesticides whether natural or manmade only when necessary for the health of the HONEYBEE.

Q. Is your honey PURE and NATURAL?

A. Did you know that there is only two NATURAL SWEETNERS in the World and they honey and maple syrup.

Yes our honey is pure, we do not add high fructose corn syrup as some companies do. When we make the creamed honeys we only add all natural ingredients such as real fruits and ground cinnamon.

Our  Gourmet Food Gift Baskets contain products that are filled with  NATURAL products made in Nebraska.

Q. What is CCD?

A. It’s been in the news for a while now and is Colony Collapse Disorder. The bees are not making it back to the colony as they go on their daily jobs. They are dying in the fields and gardens and leaving the young ones to be reared by few adults. This will cause the hive to die with an imbalance of workers to forage for the pollen and nectar

Q. Why is some honey DARKER that others?

A. The color of the honey depends on the flowers that the honeybees visit. Buckwheat will produce a very Dark honey with a very strong flavor which has been described as not for the faint of heart. Alfalfa and clover will produce a LIGHT amber honey that is very mild in flavor. That is what we carry.

Q. Where do I STORE my honey?

A. On the counter or in the cupboard NOT the refrigerator. (Bees don’t have them)

Q. How long will my honey keep?

A. Honey is the only food that will NEVER spoil.

Q. Can I give honey to my CHILD?

A. If your child is well over ONE year old they can have honey any younger and they cannot digest it.

Q. Why does my honey CRYSTALIZE?

A. All PURE honey will crystallize some in a week and some may not for years. A high sugar content may cause this. The higher the dextrose content the faster it will crystallize. There is nothing you can do about it because that is what was produced by the flower and collected as nectar by the workers to manipulate into honey.

To liquefy place container in very hot water (not boiling) until dissolved. Stirring will hasten the process.

Q. Honey and DIABETICS

A. Absorption/transport information from a lecture given by Dr. James Carpenter, University of Hawaii at Hilo Nutrition Class.

The complex sugars contained in honey are absorbed by a process known as “active transport”. While the term “active” may seem to donate that this should occur quickly, the opposite is true…since the transport of the sugars through membranes and into the bloodstream is accomplished by a chemical that is in the blood that binds to the sugar, the speed with which it is absorbed is regulated by the availability of the transport agent. Complex sugars move into the bloodstream at a slower rate and are therefore, less likely to cause an overstimulation of insulin production. Add to that that honey is twice a sweet as sugar allows you to use less amounts. It is always best to use honey sparingly as everyone my react differently.

Q. WHY SHOULD WE PROTECT THE HONEYBEE?

A. Let me ask you a question. Do you like ALMONDS? Do you like PICKLES? Do you like to drink MILK or have a delicious STEAK now and then or how about that extra piece of PUMPKIN pie at the Thanksgiving table? These are only a very few item that was created with the help of the honeybee.  Did you know that every third bite you take at the dinner table is directly or indirectly attributed to the honeybee? OK that was 5 or 6 questions.

FAQ about the vineyard

Q. Do you Sell wine?

A. No we do not sell wine. We grow the grapes and send them to a winery. We have only played with wine as a hobby.

Q. When is the best time to come for a tour?

A. The best time for a tour is from the end of July to the end of harvest (Mid Sept.) To see the grapes in full color with all the different varieties, although it is fun to see the grapes in all their stages from bloom to sampling.
